My name is Stacey Freedenthal, and I am a Denver educator, suicidologist, writer, consultant, and public speaker. (Whew, that’s a mouthful!)
My first book, Helping the Suicidal Person: Tips and Techniques for Professionals, was published in September 2017 by Routledge, an imprint of Taylor & Francis. I also authored the book Loving Someone with Suicidal Thoughts: What Family, Friends, and Partners Can Say and Do (New Harbinger, 2023).
A licensed clinical social worker since 2001, I have extensive clinical experience in crisis and suicide prevention settings. Although I no longer maintain a psychotherapy practice, I continue to provide consultation on suicide and its prevention to psychotherapists, attorneys, and loved ones of people experiencing suicidal thoughts.
As an associate professor at the the University of Denver Graduate School of Social Work, I focus my research and scholarship on suicide-related topics. I teach graduate courses on suicide assessment and intervention, clinical social work theory and practice, and other topics related to mental health.
I earned a Ph.D. in social work from Washington University, and a master’s in social work from the University of Texas at Austin. Before I became a clinical social worker, I was a journalist and worked as a staff writer for The Dallas Morning News.
